Zion National Park is 30 miles off I-15, an easy detour when driving between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. The main canyon is accessible only by shuttle from April through November, but the entrance area has enough for a meaningful one-hour visit. The Virgin River cuts through sandstone cliffs that rise 2,000 feet. The scale is vertical, intimate, and immediate. You will not hike Angels Landing. You will not do The Narrows. But you can walk along the river, stand beneath the canyon walls, and understand why Zion ranks among the most visited parks in America.
The Essential Stop

Canyon Junction Bridge
Stand on the bridge where the Pa'rus Trail crosses the Virgin River and look up-canyon. The Watchman and Bridge Mountain frame the scene. This is the view that sells Zion: red and white sandstone, green cottonwoods, blue sky. The postcard shot in person.
Afternoon light illuminates the canyon walls best. Morning is quieter but the cliffs are in shadow.
One Hour Experience
Park at the visitor center and explore on foot. The shuttle is unnecessary for this itinerary.

Zion Canyon Visitor Center
Quick stop for a map and orientation. Skip the film. Stamp your passport if you collect them.
Canyon Junction Bridge
Walk to the bridge via the Pa'rus Trail. This is your essential view. Take your time.

Pa'rus Trail (partial)
Continue on the flat, paved trail along the Virgin River. Walk as far as you like, then turn back. The trail is 3.5 miles total, but any portion is worthwhile.

South Entrance View
On your way out, stop at the pullouts along the entrance road for different angles of the canyon walls.
If You Have More Time

Court of the Patriarchs
Take the shuttle to this viewpoint of three massive sandstone peaks. A short walk from the stop. Worth the time if you have it.

Zion Human History Museum
Small museum on the shuttle route with exhibits on Zion's human history. Accessible without the shuttle via car.

Watchman Trail
A 3.3-mile round trip hike from the visitor center with canyon views. Only if you have significant extra time.

Tips
- The shuttle is required for the main canyon April-November, but the entrance area has plenty to see without it.
- Park in Springdale and walk through the pedestrian entrance to avoid the parking chaos.
- Bring water. It is desert country even when it does not feel like it.
- The drive through the park to Highway 9 East (toward Bryce) is spectacular but adds time and requires the tunnel permit for oversized vehicles.
- Las Vegas is 2.5 hours south. Salt Lake City is 5 hours north. Zion is the halfway point.
