Passing Through

One Hour in Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Driving I-77 or I-80 through northeastern Ohio and want to see a national park? Here's how to experience Cuyahoga Valley in one hour.

Cuyahoga Valley is the national park you did not know was there. Wedged between Cleveland and Akron, it protects 33,000 acres of forest, waterfalls, and the Cuyahoga River valley. I-77 and I-80 pass nearby, making it one of the most accessible parks for drivers crossing the Midwest. This is not dramatic western scenery. It is quiet eastern forest, waterfalls, and a historic canal towpath. One hour gives you Brandywine Falls, the park's signature attraction, and a glimpse of the valley that gave Cleveland its industrial might. It is also the only national park where you can ride a scenic railroad.

The Essential Stop

Brandywine Falls

Brandywine Falls

20-30 minutes · easy

A 65-foot waterfall that drops over Berea sandstone ledges in a wooded glen. A boardwalk leads to viewing platforms at the top and bottom of the falls. This is the single must-see stop in Cuyahoga Valley: accessible, photogenic, and unmistakably a waterfall worth the name.

The falls are most dramatic after rain. In late summer dry spells, the flow can thin to a trickle.
