Passing Through

One Hour in Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Driving through southeastern New Mexico and want to see the caverns? Here's the reality of a one-hour visit to Carlsbad.

Carlsbad Caverns presents a problem for quick visitors: the experience is underground, and getting there takes time. The cavern entrance is at 4,400 feet elevation, 700 feet above the Big Room. You can walk down via the Natural Entrance (1.25 miles, 750 feet descent) or take the elevator. Either way, the Big Room loop is 1.25 miles and takes 60-90 minutes to walk properly. A one-hour visit from the visitor center is technically possible if you take the elevator both ways and rush, but you will be cheating yourself of one of America's great natural wonders. This is not a drive-through park. It is a decision: commit time or save it for another trip.

The Essential Stop

The Big Room

The Big Room

60-90 minutes (minimum 45 if rushing) · moderate

The largest accessible cave chamber in North America, covering 8.2 acres with ceilings 255 feet high. Stalagmites, stalactites, columns, and draperies create an alien landscape of formations millions of years old. The paved trail loops through the chamber with stops at named features like the Bottomless Pit and Rock of Ages. This is the experience. Everything else is logistics.

Do not rush. The formations took 500,000 years to develop. Give them more than a glance.
