Gateway Towns

Talkeetna, AlaskaGateway to Denali National Park and Preserve

The base camp for Denali climbers. Cat mayors, flightseeing tours, and a two-block downtown at the foot of North America's tallest peak.

Talkeetna sits at the confluence of three rivers, 80 miles north of Anchorage, at the foot of North America's tallest peak. Every year, over a thousand climbers fly from here to Kahiltna Base Camp at 7,200 feet, then attempt the West Buttress route to Denali's 20,320-foot summit. The Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station tracks them all. For everyone else, flightseeing tours offer glacier landings without the crampons.

Downtown is two square blocks: hand-hewn signs, mom-and-pop shops, a hundred-year-old roadhouse. The town has had cat mayors since 1997. The current honorary mayor is a fluffy long-haired cat named Aurora. She wears a special collar and greets visitors when she feels like it.

Denali Flightseeing

Denali Flightseeing

Tours depart from town

The signature Talkeetna experience. Bush planes fly to the summit of North America's tallest peak, through the Alaska Range, past icefalls and glaciers invisible from the ground. Many tours include a glacier landing at 7,200 feet. One and a half to two hours, depending on the route. Book ahead.

Meet the Mayor

Downtown

Talkeetna's honorary mayor is a cat. Stubbs held the position from 1997 until his death in 2017. Denali succeeded him until 2022. The current mayor is Aurora, who wears a special collar and greets visitors at Nagley's Store when she's in the mood. Not an official government position. Still very Talkeetna.

Pro Tips

  • Denali is only visible about 30% of the time. If you see it, take the flightseeing tour that day.
  • The Alaska Railroad runs from Anchorage through Talkeetna to Denali. A scenic alternative to driving.
  • Climbing season runs May through September. Expect to see expedition teams gearing up.
  • Northern lights are visible from Talkeetna in winter. Dark skies and mountain backdrops.
